KLTC Michelle Convoy and Jeremy Navrady travelled to the lake district to take on Lake Coniston. Coniston sits as the third-largest lake in the Lake District. The open water swimming event hosted by Aquasphere Chillswim saw competitors swim Coniston end to end, starting at the south of the lake and finishing at the north end, over a total distance of 5.25 miles (8.44km). During the event, water safety kayakers and support boats were present to look out for and support competitors. Mile markers were positioned to help guide swimmers down the lake. During the prolonged swimming, nutrition and hydration were supplied via four boat-based feed stations along the route, near to the shore roughly every mile of the swim with water, energy drink, and jelly babies, starting just past the first mile mark.
Convoy, continuing her epic recent swimming quest, completed the event in 5 hrs 5 mins, with Navrady in 4 hrs 1m in ‘skins’ which in open water swimming terms means non-wetsuit. Navrady also managed to complete the event with his ankle-based timing chip adrift….thankfully it's all on strava...so it did happen.
Convoy quotes,
“ I think it was about 17/18 degrees in the water, which was lovely conditions for swimming on the day. I found it a very well organised event and the feed stations were fantastic! along with the lovely volunteers.
Honing his endurance running skills, Saw KLTC Jason Blackwell racing at the Wissey Half Marathon. Organised by Ryston runners, it is a half marathon run around the idyllic, rolling Norfolk countryside starting and finishing in the historic village of Oxborough. After a cooler spell of recent weather, It was a particularly brutal race in 24 degrees heat, with undulating terrain, and full midday sun. The first mile of the event is downhill, with the following 12 miles feeling like a very slow incline until the finish. Local residents were on hand to cheer runners on, hydration was supplied at four water stations throughout the run. After the event, the village hall had a lovely selection of homemade cakes. Blackwell ran 1:44:36 wearing KLTC kit. On the day, three more KLTC members took part in the event, running in their Ryston club attire in the form of Mark Fountain, Helen Melville, and Emma Thompson. Fountain, in his never-ending Fountain vs Blackwell non-competitive race series…..saw keen cyclist Blackwell “drafting” Fountain for the last few hundred metres where the pace slowly started to creep up towards the finish line. Fountain ran 1:44:40. Melville, continuing new training for her next triathlon event, ran 2:15:27. Thompson ran 2:13:52, which was her first half marathon distance since running Bruges over two years ago. She ran Wissey as training for her upcoming 70.3 later this month. |
