Last weekend saw KLTC members follow in the footsteps of Romans and Pilgrims tackling the Pedders Way Ultra Marathon. |
Husband and wife team Richard and Nicola Kennedy, and Neil Gayton took on this tremendous feat of endurance. The Pedders Way is a historic trail dating back to AD61 when it was used by the Romans to form paths across East Anglia after the defeat of the Iceni tribe, who were a Celtic tribe and inhabited much of what is now Mid Norfolk. The Peddars Way runs from the Suffolk border to the North Norfolk Coast, following the national trail throughout, trail running along pretty woodland of Knettishall Heath just outside Thetford, through to open countryside and tracks, past historic pingo ponds, along quiet lanes, heathland, and arrow-straight old Roman roads and tracks to eventually end at the sand and sea on the North Norfolk Coast at Holme-next-the-Sea. Along the 48 miles (77km) of the trail, they came across four villages, Stonebridge, Little Cressingham, Castle Acre, and Ringstead, one village every 11.5 miles. The Kennedys finished 41st and 42nd both in 08hrs 45 mins. Nicola placed 9th overall and was the first lady in the 40-44 category. Richard was placed 8th in his 40-44 category and Neil Gayton placed 91st running a time of 09hrs 58 mins placing him 8th in his 35-39 category. Richard quoted, ‘’It was a great race, perfect conditions if a little chilly! It's the second time we’ve done it and it’s really well organised with great camaraderie between all the runners and volunteers keeping each other going, especially towards the end when it’s starting to hurt a lot!’’ |
