One of the appeals of triathlon is the variety of races, and members of King’s Lynn Triathlon Club really took advantage of that at the weekend.
Andy Wright was racing in Staffordshire in the Ironman 70.3, a 1.2-mile swim in Chasewater reservoir, 56-mile bike across the Cannock Chase AONB then a 13.1-mile run around Stafford Town Centre. He completed the middle distance event in an impressing 6hr15min (32min16/3hrs01/2hrs31).
Over the other side of the pond, Geraldine Jordan was in San Francisco, having qualified for a slot in one of the most iconic races on the planet, the Escape From Alcatraz Triathlon. One of 2000 triathletes, she plunged in to the cold water from a boat off Alcatraz Island and had to navigate strong currents during her 1.5mile (that ended up 2miles) swim to Marina Green Beach where she had a “warm up” run to transition before heading out on a twisty and hilly 18mile bike then an brutal 8mile run past the Golden Gate bridge with deep sand and the dreaded Equinox Sand Ladder, 400 steps of fun up a cliff. She finished 10th in her AG with 3hrs22min (43min15/1hr10/1hr17). Fortunately for Jordan, Sharks of any significant size do not generally come into the Bay but she was being hunted down by her brother Paul who was also racing and matched her pace on the swim but finished in 3hrs52min.
The juniors were also in action in two locations. Andrea Campbell took part in the Norwich Junior Triathlon and finished 3rd girl in the Tristar3 category, only 40secs behind 1st place. Esmie and Lola Kidman were both racing in Sudbury, with Esmie finishing 2nd TriStar3 girl and Lola 3rd TriStar1 girl.
Dan Guppy, Dave Neale and Mark Doughty(Ryston) stayed local for the Marham Flyers Duathlon, a 20km (2lap) cycle round the perimeter of the base followed by another lap on foot. Guppy won the race again with a 2min improvement over last year in 1hr8min. Doughty finished a few seconds ahead of Neale in 6th and 7th place respectively. Two junior members took part in the 10km race under different clubs, with Thomas Elsdon finishing 31st overall in 50min50 and Sam Doughty in 61min18. Anna Seaman finished 21st overall in 47min37.
